Ringleader of forest robbers killed in 'gunfight'

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: Ringleader of a gang of forest robbers was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Shela river of the Sundarbans on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Shamsu Sheikh alias Kopa Shamsu, chief of the notorious forest robber gang 'Shamsu Bahini'.

Zahid Hossain, operation officer of Khulna RAB-6, said acting on a secret information that a gang of robbers was gathering in the area, a team of RAB-6 raided the Mrigmari canal area of Shela river this noon.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on RAB, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight.

After 15 minutes of the gunfight, the gang members fled the scene.

Khandakar Rafiqul Islam, director Khulna RAB-6, said raiding the area after the gunfight, bullet-hit Shamsu was arrested from deep into the forest. He was taken to Mongla Upazila Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Three guns, 36 bullets and 2 sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
