Road crashes in 9 dists leave 35 dead

Risingbd Desk: At least 35 people were killed and many others injured in separate road accidents in nine districts of the country on Saturday.

Among the victims, 16 were killed in Gaibandha, six in Rangpur, three in Gopalganj, two each in Natore, Sirajganj, Faridpur, Laxmipur districts and one each in Tangail and in Savar of Dhaka district.

In Gaibandha, at least 16 people were killed and 30 others injured as a bus overturned on the road after it came into a fierce collision with a roadside tree early Saturday.

The accident took place around 5.00am in Bashkata BRAC More area of Rangpur-Dhaka highway.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Palashbari Thana Mahmudul Alam said a passenger bus of Alam Enterprise hit a roadside tree as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving eight passengers dead on the spot and 38 injured.

Eight of the injured died on the way to hospital, he added.

In Rangpur, at least six people, including two women, were killed and five others injured as a truck hit a bus at Shayelashah area in Rangpur Sadar Upazila early Saturday.

Two of the deceased were identified as Sajjad, 19, and Nishat, 20.

Police and witnesses said that the accident took place when sand-laden a truck rammed stationary BRTC double-decker bus, leaving six passengers of the bus dead on the spot and five others injured.

Abdullah Hel Baki, officer-in-charge (OC) of Taraganj Highway Police said that the BRTC double-decker bus was parked at roadside as a wheel of the bus got punctured. Meanwhile, the truck hit the bus from backside.

The bodies were kept at Taraganj police station and the injured were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

In Gopalganj, two motorcyclists were killed and 15 others injured as a bus hit their vehicle after the bus driver lost control over the wheel on Gopalganj-Tungipara road in Ghonapara area of Sadarupazila around 7:45am, said Sub-inspector Shawkat of the Sadar Police Station.

The deceased were not identified immediately.

Meanwhile, another man was killed and 10 others injured in road accident in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj.

The deceased was identified as Lokman Sheikh, 50.

In Natore, two auto-rickshaw passengers were killed and two others injured as a truck ran over them on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Susmita Debnath and her neighbour Kanai Chandro in Purba Sonapatil area under the district’s Naldanga upazila.

The injured are Mongal Debnath, husband of Susmita Debnath, and their daughter Akhi Debnath.

According to sources, a potato-bound truck hit the auto-rickshaw around 6.30am in Alaipur area, leaving two dead on the spot and two injured.

In Faridpur, two people were killed and 15 others injured as a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on Dhaka-Barishal highway in Purba Sadardi area of Bhanga upazila around 9:00am, said senior station officer Saifuzzaman of Faridpur Fire Service.

In Laxmipur, a man and a woman were killed in a collision between a truck and CNG-run auto rickshaw in the district on Saturday morning.

The accident took place on Alekjander-Sonapur road in Ramgati.

The deceased were identified as Hajera Begum and Milon.

ATM Arisul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ramgati Police Station, confirmed the matter.

In Sirajganj, at least two people were killed and 15 others were injured following head-on collision between a truck and a bus on Dhaka-Bogura highway at Voyagati area under Raiganj upazila around 5:30am, reports our correspondent quoting Abdul Quader Zilani, officer-in-charge of Hatikumrul Highway Police Station.

In Savar, one person was killed and 10 others injured when a Druti Paribahan bus from Rangpur hit a truck on Dhaka- Aricha highway at Aminbazar on the outskirts of the capital this morning.

Besides, another person was killed in road crash in Tangail.
