Ship catches fire in Karnaphuli, leaves one dead

Staff Correspondent, Chattogram: An anchored ship in Karnaphuli river caught fire, leaving a man died on Tuesday night.

Two other persons also sustained burn injuries in the incident.

The incident took place near Bijoynagar ghat at Patenga area in Chattogram.

The deceased was known as Mohammad Saiful Islam, 32.

Jasim Uddin, assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service, confirmed about the incident.

He said, “An anchored ship in Karnaphuli river accidentally caught fire on Tuesday night, leaving three of its employees burnt.”

“They were rushed to Chattogram Medical College and Hospital where attending doctors declared Saiful dead,” he added.

The injured Nahid, 18, and Mizan, 25, are undergoing treatment in the Burn unit of the hospital,” he said.

However, reasons of ensuing fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately.
