Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: A court in Narayanganj sent Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, who was humiliated in public in the presence of a lawmaker, to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed for taking bribe.
Additional Chief judicial Magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta passed the order around 4:30pm on Wednesday after he surrendered before it seeking bail following an arrest warrant against Shyamal Kanti, the headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School.
Earlier in the day, the court issued the arrest warrant against Shyamal Kanti on completion of hearing on the case.
The case was filed on charges of taking bribe from a female teacher with false promises of enlisting her in the monthly pay order (MPO) system.
Morsheda Begum, an English teacher of Piyar Sattar Latif High School in Bandar area, filed the case alleging that she had bribed the headmaster Tk 1.35 lakh.
On May 13, Shyamal was physically assaulted by a mob over allegations that he made derogatory comments about religion while meting out corporal punishment to a student.
Salim Osman, Jatiya Party lawmaker from Narayanganj-5, was then seen making Shyamal hold his ears and do squats in public, sparking outrage across the country.
The High Court on May 29 directed the district administration to resubmit three reports, specifying steps taken so far against the perpetrators responsible for humiliating Shyamal.
