Six get life term for murder in Gaibandha

Gaibandha Correspondent: A court in Gaibandha sentenced six people to life-term imprisonment in a case filed over killing a man in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha.

The court also fined them TK 5,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve one more month in jail.

Gaibandha Additional District and Sessions judge Mohammad Shariful Islam handed down the verdict on Thursday afternoon.

The convicts are Mokhlesur Rahman, Ariful Islam, Siddiq Mia, Alamgir Hossain, Abdul Jalil and Sekandar Ali. All of them are hailing from Mamudpur village in Polashbari upazila of Gaibandha.

Among them, Ariful Islam is on the run.

Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Shafiqul Islam told risingbd that the convicts beat and injured one Zillur Rahman in the village over a land related dispute on February 5 in 2005. He was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in a critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

A murder case was filed in this connection with Polashbari police station a few days later, Shafiqul added.

After examining relevant documents and witnesses, the judge today handed down the verdict in the case.
