Titu becomes first mayor of Mymensingh city

Staff Correspondent, Mymensingh: Awami League's symbol, boat candidate Ikramul Haque Titu has been declared as the Mayor of the Mymensingh City Corporation (MCC) unofficially as there was no rival in the post.

Returning Officer (RO) Alimuzzaman formally announced this in the Mymensingh City Corporation election on Wednesday noon as the only rival candidate Jatiya Party’s (JP) Jahangir Ahmed withdrew the nomination papers.

Through this announcement, Ekramul Hoque Titu has become Mymensingh mayor in the first-ever polls to the newly formed city corporation.

Earlier on Tuesday, the only rival candidate Jatiya Party’s (JP) Jahangir Ahmed announced the withdrawal of nomination papers. According to the announcement, he withdrew the nomination papers on Wednesday noon on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers. So there is no rivals for the Awami League candidate Ikramul Haque Titu due to the withdrawal, sources said.

RO Alimuzzaman said, five people submitted the nomination papers for Mayoral post of Mymensingh City Corporation. Of these, the candidacy of three people was canceled. The valid candidate was two people. Meanwhile, on the last day of withdrawal of candidacy, on Wednesday, Jatiya Party nominated mayor candidate Jahangir Ahmed applied for withdrawal of candidacy. His application has been accepted.

After the May 5 election, the gazette will be published officially declaring Tito as mayor, he said.

Ikramul Haque Titu, is the present Vice-President of Mymensingh Metropolitan Awami League. He had been acting as the elected mayor of Mymensingh municipal since 2011. Later, in 2018, he was the appointed administrator in newly formed City Corporation.

The first election of Mymensingh City Corporation will be held on May 5. A total of 241 aspirants will vie for councilor post in 33 wards and 70 reserved ward female councilor candidates will participate in the elections.
