Top drug trader killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Kushtia Correspondent: A top drug trader was killed in a gunfight with police in Shaldah area of Hatash Haripur union under Sadar upazila of the district early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul Malitha, 40, son of Miraz Malitha, hailed from Taragunia area of Daulatpur upazila.

Nasir Uddin, officer in charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, said acting on secret information, a police team conducted the drive around 3:00am at char of Gorai River in Shaldah upazila. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, two gangs of drug traders opened fire on the police, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

Later, the law enforcers recovered the bullet-injured Nazmul and sent him to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Police recovered 600 pieces of Yaba pills, one foreign pistol, two bullet shells and two magazines from the spot, OC said.

Meanwhile, four members of police were injured during the gunfight.
