Truck kills garment worker, 14 vehicles torched

Staff Correspondent, Savar: A garment worker was killed and his was injured as a truck ran over them at Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) area in Ashulia of Savar, the outskirts of the capital, on Sunday evening.

Protesting the road crash, other workers set fire on 14 buses and trucks and vandalised 20 vehicles after blocking Nabinagar-Chandra highway.

Detail identities of the casualties could not known immediately.

According to sources, a worker of Shanta Fashions set up at new zone of DEPZ was returning home on foots along his wife as their factory was closed after evening. Then, a goods-laden truck ran over them, leaving the worker dead on the spot and his wife injured.

Being informed, other workers took the streets and set fire on 14 vehicles including the killer truck. They also blocked the highway and vandalised 20 vehicles.

Abdul, senior station officer of DEPZ Fire Station, said the workers set fire 14 vehicles including three buses and four trucks. They were also about to beat fire fighters when they rushed to the spot to douse fire.

Media men also rushed to the spot immediately after being informed of the incident. But workers also opposed them to perform their professional duties. Though police reached their immediately, they were reluctant to charge force on workers considering the situation. At one stage after two hours of chaos, the situation came under control.

Sheikh Rezaul Haque Dipu, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the news.
