Two killed in Bagerhat clash over harvesting paddy

Bagerhat Correspondent: Two people were killed and six others including women were injured in a clash over harvesting paddy between two groups in Bagerhat.

The incident took place at Sonakhali village of the district's Morelganj upazila on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Ibrahim Sheikh, 48, son of Torab Sheikh of the upazila's Chalitabarhi village, and Polash Sheikh, 32, son of Shahjahan Sheikh of same village.

The injured were known as Kabir Sheikh, Mojibor Sheikh, Hemayet Khan, Jahid Sheikh, Sheuli and Nazma.

Of the injured, two were referred to Khulna Medical College and Hospital in critical conditions. Other four were admitted to Morelganj Upazila Health Complex.

Kamal Hossain Mufti, physician of Morelganj Upazila Health Complex, said Ibrahim and Polash were taken to the hospital in dead. Several marks of sharp weapons were found on their bodies. They died of excessive bleeding.

Two were referred to Khulna Medical College and Hospital as their conditions deteriorated, he added.

Local sources said there was a dispute between Abdur Rahim Khan of Sonakhali village and his neighbour Shahidul Khan over a land. Rahim Khan planted Aman paddy at the disputed land this season. Around 8:00am, Shahidul Khan along with 12 to 14 people went to the land to harvest the paddy. Being informed, Rahim Khan along with his people rushed to the land and tried to stop them to harvest the paddy. At one stage, the two groups locked into a fierce clash, leaving the two dead.

Pankaj Chandra Roy, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bagerhat, confirmed the news.
