UP chairman dies after Juba League leader punches

Cumilla Correspondent: A Union Parishad (UP) Chairman has died after a local Juba League leader allegedly punched him over distributing Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) rice at Daudkandi Upazila in Cumilla.

The incident took place at Syedkharkandi village under Padua Union Parishad premises on Tuesday. The chairman was known as chairman Babul Hossain Talukder of the union.

According to locals, UP member Fazlu was distributing VGF rice at Syedkharkandi village on Tuesday noon. Union Juba League leader, also former BCL leader, Rabiul gave him pressure to distribute rice at less in weight. At one stage, Rabiul and UP member locked into altercation over the matter.

Being informed, UP chairman Babul, his brother and locals rushed to the spot. Rabiul locked into altercation with Babul too. At one stage, Rabiul pushed Babul and hit punches at him. Later, locals took Babul away from the spot.

After a while, Rabul locked into scuffle with Babul’s brother too over the incident. After reaching home, Babul fell sick. Later, he died on his way to hospital.

Shakhawat Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Cumilla (North), said, “I heard that Babul had died of cardiac arrest.”

“But many of locals alleged that he had died as he was punched and pushed. So, the body was sent to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy. The mystery behind the death would be known once report is received. The investigation is running into the matter,” he added.
