War crimes: Death-row convict arrested in Kishoreganj

Kishoreganj Correspondent: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a convict who was awarded death penalty in case filed for crimes against humanity.

RAB-14 arrested him from Borshikurha village of the district's Itna upazila around 3:30pm on Saturday.

The death-row convict is known as Hafiz Uddin, 65, resident of Kudirjangal village of the upazila.

Hassan Mostofa Swapon, commanding officer of Kishoreganj RAB-14, confirmed the news.

On May 3 last year, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) awarded four war criminals to death penalty and one jailed till death for committing crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971.

The other death-row convicts are advocate ATM Shamsuddin Ahmed of Modhyaprah village under Karimganj upazila, his younger brother retired Army captain ATM Nasir Uddin Ahmed and Razakar commander Gazi Abdul Mannan of Charparha village.

The convict who was jailed till death is Azharul Islam, 60, of Haidankhali village.

Of the convicts, Shamsuddin is in jail. Gazi Abdul Mannan died at Kanchpur of Narayanganj on December 19 last year while he was on run. ATM Nasir Uddin is on run since the trial launched.
