Worker shot in workers-cops clash in Savar dies

Staff Correspondent, Savar: A worker, who was shot during a second-round clash between garment workers and policemen in Ulail industrial area of Savar on Tuesday noon, has died.
The deceased was identified as Sumon Mia, 22, son of Amer Ali. He hailed from Sribodi upazila of Sherpur district. He used to work as sewing operator at Anlima Textile Limited in Ulail industrial belt.
Savar upazila health and family planning officer Amjad Hossain said a worker named Sumon Mia was brought dead to the hospital. He was shot at the left side of his chest.
The body was handed over to Savar Model Thana for autopsy, he added.
Earlier in the day, at least 20 people were injured in a clash between garment workers and policemen in Hemayetpur area of Savar.
The clash took place around 9.00am when police fired several teargas shells and charged batons on the workers.
The workers said the monthly wage for those in the seventh grade, who are entry-level workers, increased to Tk 8,000 from Tk 5,300 as per the latest gazette published by the government last year. But, the wages of the workers in other grades did not increase at the same rate.
