Workers baton charged, traffic on highway resumes

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: Charging batons and firing several rounds of teargas shells, police dispersed the agitating workers of a readymade garment factory who blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Dekerchala area for about four hours on Sunday demanding their due salaries.

As a result, vehicular movement on the highway resumed around 2:00pm.

Sources said that the workers from Nit and Nitex Garment took to the streets in Dekerchala area this morning and blocked the highway demanding half salary of the month August.

Workers said that the garment authority paid half salary during last Eid-ul-Azha and promised to pay the rest of amount this morning. But, the owners skipped dates again and again. Besides, 10-12 workers fell sick drinking water from the factory reservoir on Saturday.

Following the issues, factory workers started protesting around 10:00am.

Later, workers from other nearby factories joined them and vandalised several vehicles and burned tyres on the highway.

Kazi Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gachha Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said more than one thousand of workers took position in the area.

The law enforcers brought the situation under control after convincing the workers, the OC added.
