Youth killed as villagers clash in Rangpur

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: A youth was killed and 30 others were injured in a clash between police and villagers in Paglapir area of Rangpur Sadar upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Habib Mia, hailed from Gangachhara Upazila.

Local and police sources a youth named Titu Roy posted a blasphemous status on Facebook few days ago. Following the Facebook post, locals called a protest programme in Saleyasa Bazar area after Jumma prayer on Thursday. Hundreds of people gathered in the area and blocked roads.

On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 35 rounds rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. At least 30 people were injured during the clash.

Meanwhile, six houses were torched during the clash.

Later, the injured were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the Habib Mia died under treatment.

Sub-inspector Kibria, also in-charge of Dhap police outpost, said that the body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Confirming the matter, Kotwali police station (OC) Azizul Islam said that the situation is under control now.
