Anwar, Mintoo, Aman surrender before courts

BNP leaders MK Anwar (L), Abdul Awal Mintoo (M) and Amanullah Aman

Staff Correspondent: Three BNP leaders surrendered before separate Dhaka courts in several violence cases filed against them during the anti-government agitation enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance after January 5 this year.

BNP leaders MK Anwar, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Amanullah Aman surrendered on Sunday morning and filed separate bail petitions in 71 violence cases against them.

Hearings in these cases will be held later today in judges of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) courts.

Mintoo is accused in one case, Anwar in 10 and Aman in the rest, said Joynal Abedin Mesbah, one of the lawyers of the BNP leaders.

Earlier on July 27, a four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha scrapped bail for the three BNP leaders and asked them to surrender before a lower court within a week.

The court came up with the orders after hearing 56 separate petitions moved by the government seeking stay on the High Court’s anticipatory bail granted to the BNP leaders.
