Let the killing incidents be stopped

Killed prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee (left) and Xulhaz Mannan

Killing incidents continue to happen day by day. It has been a regular affair to see incidents of murders when we keep our eyes on daily newspapers or TV channels. The general people are becoming panicked in these incidents. People are scared of murder of Rajshahi University Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee and Kalabagan double murder in Dhaka as usual.

Such killing incidents of Dhaka and Rajshahi have severely shaken public life before the issue of Tonu murder disappears. The whole country including the capital Dhaka has turned into a city of panic.

It is often seen that unidentified bodies are being recovered from different areas of the country. On April 22, police recovered the bodies of a male and a female university student from a hotel room in the Shaheb Bazar area of Rajshahi. After primary investigation, police said that the female student was killed after rape and the male student was strangled to death. Sadhu Paramananda Roy (75) was killed in Tungipara of Gopalganj on April 21. On April 23, Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee of Rajshahi University was murdered. On April 25, the country`s first LGBT magazine Roopbaan editor Xulhaz Mannan, a USAID official and a former protocol officer of the US embassy in Dhaka, was killed at his Kalabagan residence in the capital along with his friend Mahbub Tonoy, an LGBT and theatre activist. A police member was injured when he prompted to chase the killers. Earlier on the day, Rustom Ali, 60, a former sergeant instructor of Mohila unit of Kashimpur Jail, was gunned down by three bikers in front of its jail gate. Besides, On April 24, miscreants chopped two people to death in Rangunia of Chittagong.

But no one could specify the reasons behind these killings. Moreover, no killing incidents are being tried in a proper way. Not only general people but also foreign diplomats and distinguished persons condemned these killing incidents.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat said at a statement that she has been flabbergasted at the murder of Xulhaz Mannan. She urged the government to arrest the killers immediately and ensure exemplary punishment for them. Meanwhile, distinguished persons said that a vested quarter is unleashing the killing incidents to destabilise the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that as part of conspiracy, such kinds of killings are being taken place aiming at imams, priests and fathers to destabilise the country in a bid to halt development programmes.

We are scared of frequent murders. We want that killing incidents be stopped and law and order situation be developed. The culprits must be brought to justice after arresting them immediately. Culture to blame the political opponents must be stopped because the real culprits managed to escape the trial taking the advantage of the culture. So, we all expect that the government will put emphasis on stopping the killing.
