HC orders freezing Tampaco owner`s account

Staff Correspondent: The High Court has directed the authorities concerned to freeze the bank accounts of the owner of Tampaco Foils Limited in Tongi that collapsed after a fire broke out inside the building on September 10 killing at least 38 people.


The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das passed the order on Monday.


The court, however, said the owner can withdraw money from the bank account only for the payment of the salaries and other benefits of the workers who died in the accident.


The HC also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned of the factory and the government to explain as to why they should not be directed to give sufficient compensation to the victims in Tampaco Foils Limited factory.


The court directed the authorities to submit reports before it in a month on how much money was given to the workers as salaries and benefits.


A deadly fire broke out at Tampaco Foils packaging factory in Tongi, the outskirts of the capital, on September 10. The building of the factory collapsed later from where dead bodies of 38 people recovered.

11 more people are still reported to be missing in the incident.
