Bumper jackfruit output likely in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR: Growers are expecting a bumper production of jackfruit in Dinajpur district this year because of the prevailing favourable climate.

After excellent budding in the maximum number of trees, jackfruit is becoming bigger in size without any report of pest attack though budding is still continuing in some areas.
Horticulturist Dr Md Saikhul Arefin of Dinajpur Horticulture Centre under the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the growing jackfruits have become bigger in size amid frequent rains in recent days without any report of pest attacks.

Md Anwarul Alam, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension of Dinajpur, told risingbd.com that buds appeared in maximum number of trees and growth of the tender jackfruits is progressing excellently this season predicting a bumper yield.

According to the DAE sources, there is no actual official statistics about the exact number of fruit-giving jackfruit trees.

Every year the district witnesses bumper production of fruits due to favourable weather condition and soil.

The house, which has no jackfruit trees, is rarely seen in all the 13 upazilas of the district. Jackfruit occupies an important place in the economy of the district.

Meanwhile, jackfruit growers of Dinajpur district incur losses every year, as they cannot preserve their fruit in the absence of any processing plant, cold storage or any better marketing facility there.

Lokman Ali, a jackfruit grower of Bhandara village under Biral upazila of the district, said he grew lots of jackfruit every year but is deprived of getting fair price of jackfruits for lack of adequate marketing facilities at most of the places.

The jackfruit growers called upon the authorities concerned and local entrepreneurs for taking necessary measures and setting up of preservation facilities for jackfruits and other seasonal fruits in the district to ensure better marketing facilities for fair price.

They also expect that the authorities concerned would ensure better marketing facilities to ensure fair prices for them as huge quantities of this seasonal fruit will be sent to other parts of the country as usual.
