2 Rohingya ‘drug traders’ killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

Two Rohingya drug traders were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar early Friday.

The incident occurred in Lambabil area under Whykong Union of the upazila around 3.30am. Three BGB members were injured in the gunfight, BGB-2 Commander Lt. Col Faisal Hasan Khan said.

The deceased were identified as Md Abul Hashim, 25, son of Md Sultan Ahmed at Kutupalong refugee camp, and Nur Kalam, 19, son of Abu Siddique of the same camp.

He said on information, a team of BGB men conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug traders opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

Bullet-hit two youths were found lying on the ground after the gunfight, he said, adding that they were taken to Teknaf Health Complex where doctors referred them to Sadar Hospital. However, they were declared dead at the district hospital.

BGB also recovered 5,000 Yaba tablets, two guns and two bullets from the spot, he said.
