Child-lifting rumour: 4 NGO workers beaten by mob

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi: Four workers of a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) were beaten by mob on suspicion of being child-kidnapers at Rautha village under Charghat upazila in Rajshahi on Monday noon.

The victims were known as Hafizur Rahman, 42, Abdul Hossain, 40, Rezaul Karim, 40, and Abul Kalam, 39.

They all identified themselves as field workers of ‘Ad-Deen Welfare Centre’.

Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Charghat Police Station, said that they were moving from door to door and persuading people to be member of the NGO. But locals started them to beat on suspicion of being child-lifters. Being informed, they were rescued and taken to the police station, he added.

The OC said, “According to procedure- it needs to inform Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in written over running NGO activities, but they did not do that. So, legal actions will be taken against them.”

Earlier on Sunday, three workers of a chip company were beaten for the same reason when they were conducting promotional works for their company at Mirzapur in Rajshahi Metropolitan. Later, police rescued them.
