Clash in Mujib Year celebration programme, 30 injured

At least 30 people were injured as two groups of Awami League leaders and activists locked into clash during celebration of Mujib Year countdown programme at Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Friday afternoon.

It was learnt that supporters of Dr Samil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, MP, locked into clash with people of the upazila chairman Syed Nazul Islam on the upazila premises during the programme. Chase and counter chase happened between the two groups, leaving a local BCL activist injured. Later, police charged batons to bring the situation control, leaving 30 people of both groups injured.

At one stage, police took Samil Uddin Shimul, MP, to UNO office safely.

The situation is now under control and additional cops have been deployed in the area to avoid any unwanted incident.

Shipganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atiqul Islam could not be reached on his mobile phone.

However, additional superintendent of police (ASP) Mahbub Alam Khan said the situation was under control when the report was filed.

Lawmaker Salim Uddin Shimul denied to make any comment over the incident.
