Cyclone Amphan takes 12 lives in Jashore

Cyclone Amphan, one of the worst storms over the Bay of Bengal in years, has killed at least 12 people in Jashore district.

The deceased are Khokon Das, 70, his wife Bijon Das, 60, Wajed Ali, 50, his son Isa, 15, and Achhia Begum, 70, of Monirampur upazila; Moyna Begum, Muktar Ali, 65, Mijanur Rahman, 60, and  Gopalchandro Biswas of Sharsha upazila;  Khanto Begum, 45, and her daughter Rabeya, 13, of Chougachha upazila, and Doli Begum of Bagharpara upazila.

Most of them died after trees fell on them and walls collapsed on them due to the strong winds on Wednesday night.

Jashore Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Arif gave Tk 20,000 cash to the families of six dead persons each on Thursday.

District Intelligence Officer Moshiur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Cyclone Amphan, pounded mostly Satkhira, Khulna and Jashore districts in Bangladesh, destroying thousands of houses, damaging croplands and uprooting trees and electricity poles.

Consumers in the affected districts were without power after strong winds snapped electricity lines.
