Cyclone ‘Bulbul’ hits Satkhira

The very severe cyclonic storm, ‘Bulbul’ hit the Satkhira coast early Sunday.

A special bulletin of the Met office said the cyclone moved northwestwards at a speed of about 8 kph and laid over the northwest bay and adjoining coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and southwestern part of Bangladesh.

It  moved in a northeasterly direction further, weakened gradually and crossed the West Bengal-Khulna coast .
 
The maximum sustained wind speed within 64 kms of the severe centre is about 100 kph rising to 120 kph in gusts/squalls. Sea has remained very high near the severe cyclone centre.

“The coastal districts of Bhola, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna and Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars will come under great danger signal No 10,” the Met Office said in a special bulletin.
 
The low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by a storm surge of 5-7 feet highest above the normal astronomical tide.
