‘Dacoit’ killed in ‘gunfight’

A suspected dacoit has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Maheshpur upazila in Jhenidah district.

The gunfight took place around 3.00am on Tuesday in Bakerkhal area of Khalishpur-Jibonnagar highway.

The deceased was identified as Shaharul alias Khokon, son of late Hamid Ali at Jagusa village of the upazila.

Police also recovered a shutter gun, one bullet and some local weapons from the spot.

Jhenidah Police Super Hasanuzzaman said acting on a tip off, that a gang of dacoits was preparing for committing robbery falling trees on the road and a team of police conducted a drive there. Dacoits fired at police as soon as they reached the area, forcing policemen to fire back in self-defense which triggered a gunfight. Police later recovered the body from the spot.
Khokon was wanted in several cases, he added.
