Former Janata Bank cashier held for Tk 2cr embezzlement

Police arrested former cashier of Janata Bank in Noakhali for allegedly embezzling over Tk two crore.
The arrestee is Liton Chandra Das, 41, son of Rabindra Kumar Das of Dakkhin Mohammadpur village under Senbag upazila of the district.
Liton Chandra was produced before a district court yesterday afternoon and later sent to jail, said Companyganj Police Station Officer-in-charge (OC) Robiul Haque.
Earlier in the day, some bank officials called cashier Liton Chandra at Bashurhat branch of Janata Bank in Companyganj of Noakhali and handed him over to police, the OC said.
Liton Chandra was the accused in a case filed by the bank's Bashurhat branch manager Shamsul Islam for allegedly embezzling the money, said the OC.
Police filed a petition to a district court seeking remand for Liton Chandra, the police official added.
According to the case statement, Liton embezzled the money between February 6, 2012 to February 3, 2020 when he was a cashier at Bashurhat branch of the bank. He is now officer (cash) of Char Alexander branch of Janata Bank in Laxmipur.
Shamsul Islam, manager of Janata Bank's Bashurhat branch, said that they have already recovered nearly Tk one crore from Liton and continued effort to recover the rest.
The bank manager also asked the clients not to be panicked over the embezzlement of money from the bank, adding that the depositors and clients will get their money deposited to the bank.
