Italy-returnee dies in Bhairab

An Italy-returnee with fever and respiratory problems died at a hospital in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj on Sunday (March 11) night.

The man, aged over 60, breathed his last at approximately 11:00pm after he went to a private hospital for a checkup as he was suffering from fever, coughing and respiratory problems, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Bulbul Ahmed has said.

His blood samples were collected whether he was infected with coronavirus or COVID-19, Bulbul Ahmed said.

The man who was a resident in Jagannathpur Madhyapara of Bhairab municipality area returned home from Italy on February 28.

As the man was suffering from fever, coughing and breathing problems, he visited a private hospital around 10:00pm yesterday where he had been asked to visit a heart specialist.

He was rushed to a specialised cardiac hospital but he died there, the official said.

Hearing about the death, local administration has imposed restrictions on the running of the two hospitals, he said.

The administration has also limited the movement of the residents of 10 neighboring houses, he further said.

Being informed by locals, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) collected his blood samples this morning, he added.

Dr Mujibor Rahman, civil surgeon of Kishoreganj, confirmed his death and said the Italy returnee went to the two hospitals of Bhairab with coughing and breathing problems last night but he died later at night.

The body will be buried under the supervision of the local administration as per the latest information.
