‘Liza set herself on fire as police disagree to file case’

Rajshahi college student Liza Rahman, 20, set herself on fire to death as police did not file case against her husband. She said this in her dying declaration.

Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir, director (crime and investigation) of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) confirmed the matter.

Liza set herself on fire in front of Shah Makhdum Police Station Complex in Rajshahi city on September 28. She succumbed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on October 2.

A four-member probe body of NHRC is investigating into the incident. The probe body visited Rajshahi on October 2 for the first time.

On Thursday, the committee again visited Rajshahi and talked to two cops of Shah Makhdum Police Station, four officials of police victim support centre, four witnesses, Liza’s college principal and several others concerned.

On Friday, Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir briefed media at a rest house in Rajshhai.

He said, “Liza said in her dying declaration that Police disagreed to file her case. And that’s why she set her on fire to death.”
