Man accused in 23 cases killed in ‘gunfight’

A dacoit gang leader named Md. Shahadat Hossain Shapon has died in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Companiganj upazila of Noakhali.

The incident took place around 5:00am on Monday in Chhotodholi village of Muchapur union of the upazila. 

The deceased, 39, was the son of late Belayet Hossain in Bamni Bazar area of Rampur union.

Police said that Shapon was accused in 23 cases, including murder and robbery.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station Md. Arifur Rahman told risingbd “Police raided Chhotodholi after being informed that Shahadat Hossain and his associates were preparing to commit robbery in the area early Monday.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them forcing the police members to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight.

Police members rescued Shapon with bullet injury from the spot and took him to Noakhali Sadar Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead. The body has been kept  in the hospital morgue.

A pipe gun, 13 cartridges and four sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, he added.
