Man accused in child rape case killed in ‘gunfight’

A man, who allegedly raped a minor girl, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Senbag upazila of Noakhali early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Mizanur Rahman, 40, son of Alauddin at Nawtala village under Sonaimuri upazila.

Abdul Baten Mridha, officer-in-charge of Senbag Police Station, said that Mizanur, an accused in the rape case, was detained on Sunday afternoon. According to his confession, a police team conducted a drive along with him to detain other accused.  At that time, when the police team reached the Sonakandi area, Mizanur's associates opened fire on the police and tried to snatch him.

Mizanur's associates fled when the police fired back in self-defense and the police later rescued bullet-hit Mizanur from the spot.

He was immediately taken to Noakhali General Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.
Three police members were also injured in the gunfight. Law enforcers also recovered a LG and two rounds of bullets from the spot, he said.
