One held over Indian student murder

Staff Correspondent, Chittagong: Police have arrested another Indian student in connection with a case filed over the murder of Indian medical student Ateef Sheikh at Akbar Shah Thana area in the port city on the night of July 14.

The arrestee is Niaj Guru, a roommate of the murdered Indian medical student Ateef Sheikh.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Mahmud of Akbar Shah Police Station confirmed the arrest of Niaj Guru.

A court in Chittagong sent Niaj Guru to jail after he was produced before it on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said six Indian students including Ateef Sheikh (25) and Niaj Guru used to live in a rented room in ‘Bilkis Mansion’ adjacent to Foy’s Lake in Khulsi area under Akbar Shah Thana.

They took liquor in their room around 1:00 am. At one stage, they exchanged heated words and locked into an altercation. Later, they stabbed each other with a sharp weapon.

Hearing the screams of them, residents of the building rushed in and found their room locked from inside. They later informed police. Breaking the door, police found that Ateef Sheikh and Wilson (26), Ateef’s roommate, also an Indian student, was critically injured. Then police rushed them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared Ateef Sheikh dead.

Ateef Sheikh and Wilson were the students of MBA of the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), hailing from Monipur state.
