Rape, murder accused killed in ‘gunfight’

An accused of a rape and murder case has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Faridpur.

The deceased was identified as Yeasin Mollah, 22, son of Moni Mollah in Warelesspara area of the district town.

According to police, Yeasin Mollah was one of the accused in the rape and murder case of disabled girl Fatema. He was also accused in several other cases.

Police claimed that the gunfight took place around 2.00am on Monday in Rothkhola Launchghat bridge area. Three members of law enforcement were also injured in the gunfight.

Sub Inspector of Kotwali police station Belal Hossain said seeing a video footage, a team of police conducted a drive to arrest Yeasin. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Yeasin and his cohorts opened fire on policemen, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight, leaving Yeasin dead on the spot.  His cohorts managed to flee from the spot.
