‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in an area near the Cumilla-Sylhet Highway in Burichang upazila on Sunday midnight.
The deceased was identified as Mazharul Islam, 24, son of late Moin Uddin at Mashikara village of Debidwar upazila. He was accused in several robbery cases, police said.
A foreign pistol and sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.
According to police, acting on a tip off, a gang of robbers were taking preparations to commit robbery in the area and a team of police conducted a drive. Sensing the presence of policemen, the robbers opened fire forcing the policemen to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight. Mazharul was caught in the line of fire and sustained gunshot wounds.
Later, the injured was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.
Six policemen were also injured in the gunfight, police claimed.
