Woman sells hair to buy milk for child (video)

A woman has sold her hair to buy milk for her baby at Savar, the outskirts of Dhaka.

It was learnt that Sathi Begum, a resident of Savar bank colony area, along with her two children had been starved for last two days. But nobody came forward with any relief.

At one stage, she sold her hair of head to buy milk for her child of 18-month-old.

Sathi told risingbd that her family came to the capital’s Mirpur area from Mymensingh four months ago because of misery. From there, they shifted to Savar one and a half months ago.

She said along with her husband and two children reside at a rented tin-shed room at Savar bank colony area. Her husband Manik Majumder is a labouer. She also works as domestic help at different houses. But all works have been suspended due to coronavirus pandemic.

There had been no food at home for past two days. We are new comer in the area. So, we do not know people here. We do not know where relief is given. Being informed by neighbours, I went to places for relief. But nobody gave foods as I’m unknown, she added.

She further said as there was no way for me, I sold my hair to a hawker and got Tk 180. With this, I bought some milk for child and a kg of rice.

Rickshaw-puller Sumon, a neighbor of Sathi, said, “There is no passenger on the road. We are also passing days with miseries. For this, we could not help Sathi.”

Abdullah Al Mahfuz, Assistant Commissioner (land) in Savar, said, “I was not aware of the matter. I will take steps to reach relief to the family immediately.”

Savar municipality mayor Abdul Gani said, “We distributed relief at different places of Savar municipality. I was not aware that someone sold her hair for misery.”
