Our Tangail our pride

Tangail is a historical district in our country. It is one of the largest districts of Bangladesh. It’s related to every eventual history. Many kings, zamindars, ruled this region. Their innumerable memories are intertwined in different places of this district.

Tangail is very tidy in river channels, nature, industrial culture, customs, etc. Here many old zamindar houses and buildings are located. These fill our minds with peace. Tangail is the best for that person who likes to visit the old and historical place so much.

The area of the whole district is 3414.35 sq km. The total number of villages is 2429 and Upazilas are 12. Every Upazila is full of history, potential products so on.

Tangail Sadar Upazila:

At first, let us know about Sadar Upazila. Tangail Sadar upazila was established in 1962. From then, it was transformed into an Upazila in 1983. There are 11 unions. Tangail sadar upazila has an area of 302 sq km.

There are many rivers around this Sadar Upazila among which Jamuna, Dhaleshwari, Louhjong, Chennai are the main ones. The total land area of this Upazila is 74356.02 hectares. Paddy, jute, wheat, potato, mustard, maskalai, garlic, maize, groundnut, onion & many other vegetables are grown here.

There are many industries, nearly three and a half thousand. There are weaving industry, copper and bronze industry, confectionary, bidi industries. There are also soap factories, bread and biscuit factory, shoe factory, china mill, flour, rice mill, and many more.

Besides, there are 1795 ponds here. There is a government fish farm here. Moreover, there are natural river fish available such as rui, katal, mrigel, Boal, Gajar, Taki, Foli, Kai, Tengra, Hilsa, Putti, Baim, Khailsa. There are also nurseries and 200 poultry farms.  

Tangail Sadar Upazila also has many famous educational institutions. In this upazilla, here situated some of the places of historical interests & parks or other nice places where people spend their free time.

Delduar Upazila:

It's an ancient Upazila in Tangail district. It was ruled by the Mughal emperor.  Famous Elastin port was situated here, which has been a famous river port since the Mughal era. Nowadays Elastin is also a major hub for the jute business.

The total area of the Upazila is 164.50 sq km. There are six unions in this Upazila. Many kinds of crops are grown here such as paddy, jute, wheat, mustard, sugarcane, pulse, maize, banana, and nuts.

Pathrail is famous for its looms. Saris are produced here and there is a big market for Tangail saree and dresses.

There are many famous cottage industries here. The area is also famous for its bamboo and cane industry. Moreover, the Shital Pati of this area is exported abroad. Not only Shital Pati, by bamboo here, made a lot of necessary things like bed, table, chair, rack, shoe rack, kitchen rack, but wall also decorated things, etc.

Although pottery has decreased now a day but many potters live in this area for making many ingredients.

Delduar was once famous for its paper industry. There are many big markets for groceries and vegetables because it is a place where many cultivated crops and vegetables are grown in large quantities.

Nagarpur Upazila:

Being a river port, it was once a business center. The streamer used to run directly from here to Kolkata. This Upazila was created in 1983 with 12 unions.

The amount of cultivated land is 22,592 hectares. The main agricultural products are paddy, jute, wheat, and mustard. Now bananas and sugarcane are produced in huge quantities. Besides these, mango, jackfruits, blackberry, plum, lychee are also grown here.

There are 40 poultry farms here many cattle farms also. In this Upazila there are 298 ponds of different sizes which is home to many types of fish. Naturally, it is full of many resources but here the percentage of educated people is not so high.

Sakhipur Upazila:

It is believed that there was human habitat in this place 3000 years ago. Sakhipur upazila was established in 1976 and was transformed into upazila in 1983. The later municipality was formed in 2000. There are 6 unions total. There are many tribes here.

There used to be an iron industry here, now it is on the verge of extinction. Lots of paddies, wheat, jute mustard, bananas, vegetables, pulses, spices are cultivated in this Upazila. Currently, many farmers are cultivating foreign fruits like Malta, Dragon fruits, strawberries, and rambutan.

Mirzapur Upazila:

It is the first developed Upazila in our country. Mirzapur thana was transformed into Upazila in 1982. The total area of Upazila is 367.25 sq km. There are a municipality & 13 Unions. 

The total land area of Mirzapur is 90,749 acres. The main crops are paddy, jute, mustard, round potato, khesari kalai etc. Here mustard is so much famous, that's why there are two hats only for mustard mainly. There is a wide range of weavings here.

Here copper and bronze, also pottery the industry was available but nowadays it’s become lost going on day by day.

In this Upazila there are many goldsmithing industries. Here gold is designed and sent to different parts of the country. Here more than 350 poultry farms, 70 chicken farms, ponds are situated. There are 205 rice threshing mills. Garo and Mandai live in the hilly areas of Mirzapur. The Cadet College here is one of the best educational institutes in country. Moreover, there are many schools, colleges, madrasas in the upazila.

Madhupur Upazila:

At one time a lot of honey is available in this Upazila and that’s why it’s called Madhupur. Madhupur is a very old police station. Tangail was declared a subdivision in 1869 and Madhupur a police station in 1898. This Upazila includes 6 unions. The area of Upazila is 360.48 sq km.

In this Upazila, the soil is red and so hard. Here main crops are paddy, jute, wheat, potato. Here so many fruits and vegetables are cultivated all around the year. The main cash crops are pineapple, banana, jackfruit, and so on.

It is also rich in olive, litchi, mango, papaya. There is no cold storage for the storage of fruits or vegetables, so there is a lot of wastage of fruits. There are also cultivated cassava, indigo, coffee, soybean and chirata. There is a fruit processing factory here and also a soap factory, biscuits factory, chips factory. This Upazila is also famous for fish farming. There are 316 ponds. There is more than 200 farm for cattle &poultry.

There is Modhupur forest here, which is the 3rd largest forest in our country. Apart from shal tree, there are many species of trees here. There is an attractive rubber garden also. The timber is very good in quality and it is said that the timber was taken away during the construction of Tajmahal in Kolkata. Even many more years ago the timber of this forest was exported to many different countries. Although the Agriculture sector has improved, the standard of living is not improved here.

Ghatail Upazila:

This is the 2nd largest Upazila in Tangail district.  The total area is 450.61 sq km. In 1906, Ghatail was transformed into a full-fledged police station. This Upazila was formed in 1983. There is one municipality and 11 unions. 

This upazila is very developed for fish farming. There are 5590 ponds here. 

The cultivated land is 32420 hectares. It has full of natural resources like wood, fruits, flowers, leather, cotton, etc. This Upazila has cultivated a huge amount of agricultural products.  There is a lot of rice, wheat, mustard, potato, spices, etc produced in very good quality. 

Peanuts, cotton, cherries, pineapples, dragon fruits are also abundant here.

Not so advanced industry here but there are 55 wood sawmills, bakery factories, 36 brick factories, cotton spinning mills, and many more.

There are about 42 cattle farms, 20 goat farms, and 160 poultry farms in this Upazila. Even here a lot of priority is given to Animal Husbandry. There are about 180 beekeeping nurseries. There are many small archeological sites in this Upazila. 

Gopalpur Upazila:

It is the 3rd largest Upazila in the Tangail district. Gopalpur thana was established in 1928 and it was inaugurated to Upazila in 1983. The district has a long traditional history.

The total area of this Upazila is 193.38 sq km. It’s consists of 6 unions. Like many other Upazila Gopalpur is dependent on agriculture. The area under cultivable land is 1561 hectares. The main agricultural product is paddy. Besides, there ate mustard, round potato, chili, onion, garlic, jute, pulses, etc are cultivated in huge amounts.  There is about 50-layer Chicken farm here. There is a zamindar bari, a mosque with 201 domes.

Bhuapur Upazila:

Bhuapur is one of the Upazilas of Tangial situated on the bank of Jamuna. This Upazila was established in 1983. Once upon a time, there was a river port here but no anymore. 

There are chars in many areas here &in this char area here produces lots of peanuts. Otherwise, the main agricultural products of this Upazila are paddy, jute, wheat, sugarcane, sweet potato, sesame, linseed, kaun, kalai, onion, garlic, ginger, chili etc.

There are factories for making furniture with the help of a bamboo cane, steel factories and there are factories in which agricultural machinery is made. Fish farming, cattle, and poultry farms are playing a significant role in the economy of this Upazila. There are more than 300 farms here.

All in all, there is a lot to contribute to the economy but needs to better take care of.

Kalihati upazila:

Kalihati upazila is located about 20km north of Sadar upazila. The total area of this Upazila is 301.12 sq km. Kalihati thana is turned into an upazila in 1983.The total cultivated land area is 31200 hectares. Here the main crop is paddy. There are many other crops as well. Here is one of the largest weaving industries also.

Basail upazila:

Whenever I think of the name of Basail, it automatically reminds me of the beautiful place of Basulia. Basail thana was formed in 1913 and later it was turned into an Upazila in 1983. There are 6 unions here. Jhinai is the main river which is flowed through the Upazila.

The total cultivated land area of this Upazila is 15600 hectares. Here everywhere rice is grown up and another main crop of this area is wheat. Here a special type of paddy is cultivated by a farmer name chamara. There are 97 commercial mango orchards, 10 lemon orchards, 24 guava orchards. Besides, there are many kinds of mixed fruits orchards in this Upazila and also 18 medicinal tree gardens. All around the Upazila there are many trees that made this place so beautiful.

Dhanbari Upazila:

The last tribe of Tangail district is Dhanbari Upazila. The Upazila consists of 6 unions and covers an area of 130.20 sq km.

In this Upazila there is red soil in many places. This Upazila is famous for paddy and 13 big paddy mills are located in this area. From here rice is supplied all over the country. Warehouses here are open 24 hours a day. There are also large quantities of jute, wheat, potatoes, oats, bananas, pineapples, etc.

There are also biscuits and bread mills, 10 bakery industries. There are many people involved in the weaving industry.

There are 498 public and private ponds here for fish farming and also commercial honey has sprung up.
