11 to die in Moazzem murder case in Joypurhat

A court in Joypurhat has sentenced 11 people to death for killing school student Moazzem in Sadar upazila in June 2002.

The convicts have been also fined Tk 50,000 each.

Additional District and Sessions Court-2 Judge Abbas Uddin pronounced the verdict on Wednesday (January 31). 

Joypurhat court’s Public Prosecutor (PP) Nripendranath Mandal confirmed the matter.

The death row convicts are Bedarul Islam Bedin, son of late Yunus Ali Dewan; Monwar Hossain Monsur, son of Ali Mokhlesur; Tutul, son of Wares Ali; Rana, son of Aziz Master; Sarwar Roushan Sumon, son of Shahjahan Mridha; Moshiur Rahman Ershad, son of Moslem Udddin; Nazrul Islam, son of Kabej Uddin Mandal; Shahi, son of late Mogbul Hossain; Sujon, son of Rafik; Rahim, son of Nur Hossain Numu and Dablu, son of Abul Kashem.

According to the case statement, the accused picked up Moazzem Hossain, son of Fazlur Rahman from Pramanikpara area of the district, from Chitra Cinema Hall area on June 28, 2002 and beat him mercilessly with sharp weapons and sticks. Later, they left Moazzem unconscious beneath a mango tree on Jamalganj road.

Being informed, Moazzem was taken to a hospital nearby but he succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the victim’s father filed a murder case with Sadar police station against the accused.

On October 29, 2003, the investigation officer of the case submitted charge sheet to the court. After a long hearing in the case, the court pronounced the verdict today.
