RMG worker killed in Gazipur road crash, highway blocked

A readymade garment employee was killed after a garbage truck of Gazipur City Corporation ran over her in the Metropolitan Kunia Targachh area on Saturday (February 24) morning.

Angered by the accident, local people and workers of different garment factories in the area took to the street and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway soon after the incident, halting the vehicular movement on the highway.

The angry workers also vandalised and torched several vehicles.

Following the accident, huge traffic was created on the highway.

The deceased could not be identified immediately. She was an employee of a garment factory in the area.

The accident happened at about 8:30am when the woman was crossing the road.

According to the eyewitnesses, the woman was crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the morning. Then a speeding garbage truck of Gazipur City Corporation ran over her, leaving the woman dead on the spot.

Muhammad Kamal Hossain, deputy-police commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, confirmed the incident.
