Train derailment snaps Dhaka’s rail link with northern regions

A compartment of a Rangpur-bound freight train derailed on Saturday (February 24) at Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur district, causing a halt to the rail link between Dhaka and the northern regions of Bangladesh.
The incident took place at Gulpara area of Parbatipur-Rangpur railway around 7:45am.
Rezaul Karim, station master of Parbatipur Railway Station, said that the freight train was heading towards Rangpur with 31 compartments full of wheat. When it reached Gulpara area around 7:45 am, the cargo compartment close to the engine abruptly derailed from the tracks.
Rail service between the northern regions of Bangladesh and Dhaka is therefore cut off, he said.
On information, a tool van arrived at the spot and started the salvage work, he added.
Rail service will be restored once the rescue work completes, the station master said.
