Dhaka’s rail link with northern regions restored after 7 hours

Rail communication between Dhaka and the northern regions of Bangladesh has been restored after seven and a half hours of disruption.

The rail communication became normal after the derailed compartment was removed from the line around 3:10pm on Saturday (February 24), said Rezaul Karim, station master of Parbatipur Railway Station.

Earlier around 7:45am, a compartment of a Rangpur-bound freight train derailed on Saturday (February 24) at Gulpara area of Parbatipur-Rangpur railway at Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur district, causing a halt to the rail link between Dhaka and the northern regions of Bangladesh.

Rezaul Karim, station master of Parbatipur Railway Station, said that the freight train was heading towards Rangpur with 31 compartments full of wheat. When it reached Gulpara area around 7:45 am, the cargo compartment close to the engine abruptly derailed from the tracks.

Rail service between the northern regions of Bangladesh and Dhaka is therefore cut off, he said.

On information, a tool van arrived at the spot and started the salvage work, he added.
