Crocodiles with satellite transmitter found in Pirojpur

A crocodile with satellite transmitter has been found in Tushkhali river of Pirojpur, according to officials.

Azad Kabir, an officer-in-charge of the Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in the eastern part of the mangrove forests, confirmed the news on Thursday (March 28).

He said that four saltwater crocodiles with satellite transmitters were released in the Sundarbans. Of them, three have returned to the Sundarbans, but one has crossed a long way and it is now roaming in Pirojpur.

In just 11 days, the crocodile has traveled about a hundred kilometers. The crocodile has traveled a long way to find a safe environment for itself, he added.

Earlier, aiming to know the life cycle of crocodiles, the Forest Department had released two crocodiles with satellite transmitters in the Harbaria point of the Sundarbans on March 13. Three days later, two more crocodiles were released in the river.

The forest department and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have jointly conducted the task of releasing the satellite transmitter on the body of the crocodile. German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (GIZ) supported them.
