Trawler carrying 70 passengers capsizes in Mongla River

A trawler carrying additional passengers capsized in the Mongla River in Bagerhat on Sunday (May 26) morning.

Fortunately, most of the passengers managed to swim ashore immediately although some passengers are feared missing in this connection, locals said.

Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nishat Tamanna said: “A trawler capsized in the Mongla River between 9am and 10am for carrying additional passengers. We heard that there were 70 to 80 passengers in the trawler. We are keeping track of the situation immediately after the trawler accident, checking if any passengers are missing, using the municipality’s CCTV cameras.”

Local divers, the Coast Guard, and fire service members started the search and rescue operation immediately after the incident.
