Police have rescued Preeti Khandaker Halima, a woman vice chairman candidate in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria, two days after her reportedly going missing while campaigning for votes.

She was rescued from Kanchpur area of Narayanganj on Thursday (May 30) morning and she was taken to Bijoynagar Thana.

Earlier, Preeti Khandaker’s husband, Masud Khandaker filed a GD with Bijoynagar Thana in this regard.

He also filed a petition to District Returning Officer in this regard on Wednesday (May 29).

According to the petition, 35-year-old Preeti Khandaker went from Harashpur union in Bijoynagar upazila during election campaigning on May 28 but hasn’t returned since.

She said, “On May 28, I went to Harashpur union for election campaign with two associates. While campaigning, two women offered me a betel leaf. After taking it, I became sick. Later, they took me at a microbus. Today, at around 8:00am, the gang dropped me on a highway in Dewanbagh area of Narayanganj. After that, I contacted my husband. The gang took away a mobile phone, money and ornaments”.

The Bijoynagar upazila parishad election is scheduled for 5 June.

Preeti has been contesting for the vice chairman post under the ‘lotus’ symbol. Three other women candidates are also competing for the post.
