People going to shelters in Sunamganj 

Heavy rains and upstream water flows have submerged eight upazilas of Sunamganj.

Nearly 400,000 people are marooned by floodwater and many people are moving to shelters set up by the district administration.

75-year-old Antara Moyal, a resident of Dupakhali area of Sunamganj town, said she is going to a shelter with her daughter-in-law, grandson and son as their house has been submerged.

Sunamganj town’s Nabinnagar, Natunpara, Hashannagar, Shaheed Abul Hossain Road, Uttar Arpinnagar, Teghoria, Kazir Point, Sholghar, Sabzi Bazar, Shantibagh, Bandhanpara and other areas have been submerged. People are facing huge sufferings as water has entered their houses and shops.   

The district administration has opened a total of 516 shelters.

According to Water Development Board, Sunamganj, Surma was flowing 40 cm above the danger level at Shologhor point on Wednesday morning.   

100mm rain was recorded in last 24 hours in the district. Met office predicts that more rainfall may occur. 

Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rashed Iqbal Chowdhury said the district administration has taken all preparations to tackle the flood situation.
