5000 families marooned in Lalmonirhat

Around 5,000 families have been left marooned as onrush of water from upstream inundated many areas and triggered serious river erosion in Lalmonirhat district.
Flooding has affected the people in Garibullah Para, Barogharia, Gobardhan, Sadar Upazila Kalmati area of Mahishkhocha Union of Aditmari Upazila.
Roads, various crops field like paddy, nut, chili have been swamped with flood water in low laying areas, causing immense sufferings.
Saidul Islam (45), a resident of Kalmati in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, said that it has become tough to cook as water logging is prevailing here. Managing cattle food has become tough also.
Zabayer Hossain (40), a resident of Gobardhan area of Mahishkhocha Union, said that many people come and promise us to free from the terrible grip of Teesta. But the promises are not implemented.
Lalmonirhat Water Development Board Executive Engineer Sunil Kumar Roy said that the water levels of all the rivers in Lalmonirhat including the Teesta due to nonstop rain.
Erosion may occur at several points when the water level drops. Geo-bags will be dropped as an emergency measure to prevent river erosion, he added.
