2 workers killed being run over by truck in Kaliakair, road blocked

Two garment workers were killed and three others injured as a truck ran over them in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur district on Tuesday.

Following the incident, outraged workers set the truck on fire and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway, bringing the vehicular movement to a standstill.

Shahadat Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Naozor Highway Police Station, confirmed the matter.

Quoting locals, the OC said, during the lunch break, workers from Sterling Designs factory in the Palli Bidyut area of Kaliakair were crossing the highway on foot. At that moment, a fast-moving cargo truck, heading toward North Bengal, ran over them, leaving two workers dead on the spot and three others injured.

The injured were admitted to a nearby hospital, OC Shahadat said.

Police are trying to bring the situation under control, negotiating with the workers, he added.
