Railway employees are likely to stop train service across the country from midnight on Monday (January 27) due to non-implementation of the demands.
Railway employees can go on strike from today midnight demanding payment of pension and gratuity by adding the mileage earned (part of pay running allowance) as per the rules.
The Bangladesh Railway Running Staff Oikya Parishad (Loco Master, Guard, TTE) had set a deadline of January 27 to meet their demands. But there was no solution to the issue till Monday (January 27) afternoon, the railway running staff can go on strike. There is a possibility that rail communication across the country will be suspended.
This standoff began after running staff extended a previous deadline for meeting their demands from 31 December to 28 January. Despite assurances, they claim no meaningful progress has been made, leading to the decision to proceed with the strike.
The Ministry of Railways has urged the running staff to withdraw from the strike, citing passenger suffering as a primary concern.
Until 2021, locomasters, assistant locomasters, guards, and traveling ticket examiners have traditionally worked beyond their duty hours and received extra pay for that. They also received pension benefits based on the pay for their extra work.
But in November that year, the Awami League government declined to grant pension benefits based on the extra work.
