The water level of the Kalni, Kushiyara, and Khowai rivers in Habiganj are flowing above the danger level.
Nonstop rainfall and the floodwaters from India flowing down from upstream caused the rise of water levels in the district's rivers at an alarming rate.
About 400 meters of its dam has collapsed due to the strong current of the Khowai River. Officials concerned fear that if the entire dam collapses, more than 50 nearby areas will be flooded.
The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said that the water level of the Khowai River was flowing at a height of 21.25 meters at Balla Point in Chunarughat Upazila till Sunday (June 1) noon.
At the same time, the water level of the Kalni-Kushiyara River in Ajmiriganj Upazila was 5.49 meters high, which is 44 cm above the danger level.
Md Ekramul Haque, Deputy Assistant Engineer of Habiganj BWDB said that due to continuous rainfall for several days, as well as the Indian flood water coming down from upstream, the water level in the Khowai, Kalni, and Kushiyara rivers is rising rapidly.
Habiganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Shamim Hasnain Mahmud said that a major landslide has occurred over a 30-meter area of the Khowai River. Steps have been taken to repair that by placing sand-filled geo bags.
