Father, son killed in Sirajganj road crash

A man and his son were killed when a truck hit a battery-powered auto-rickshaw in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj. Another son was injured in the incident.

The accident took place in the Chariya Madhyapara area of Salanga under the upazila on Tuesday (July 8).

The deceased were identified as Abdul Mannan Khandaker, 70, and his son Jewel Khandaker, 35.

According to police and locals, two sons were taking their ill father to Enayetpur Khaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in the district by a battery-run auto-rickshaw from Purana Bera in the police station area. When they arrived in front of Nur Jahan Hotel in the Chariya Madhyapara area of the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway, the auto-rickshaw veered into the middle of the highway due to potholes.

At this time, a speeding truck traveling from Hatikumrul to Bonpara ran over the auto-rickshaw, leaving auto-rickshaw passengers Abdul Mannan Khandaker and his younger son Jewel Khandaker dead on the spot and his elder son Rasel Khandaker injured. Locals rescued all of them and sent them to the hospital.

Hatikumrul Highway Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdur Rauf confirmed the incident.

Legal action will be taken in this connection, the OC said.
