Konu Mia coming out from jail
Konu Mia, who spent 30 years, 2 months and 19 days in prison without trial, has been released.
No trial was held in a murder case in Habiganj. He passed long days in prison. Finally, the mentally unstable Konu Mia was released from Habiganj District Jail on Tuesday (July 15) afternoon.
Later, he returned home with his relatives. Before going home, Konu Mia expressed gratitude to the Legal Aid Officer and the lawyers concerned.
Eyewitnesses said Konu Mia's two brothers, Manu Mia and Nasu Mia, were waiting at the prison gate. Konu Mia stopped for a moment when he saw his two brothers after coming out of the jail. Then he slowly walked forward and hugged them.
Saiful Islam, deputy jailer of Habiganj District Jail, said, “Konu Mia has been released after getting a bail order from the court. After his release, his two brothers came and took him home.
Konu Mia is a resident of Singhagram village in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj district. His father’s name is late Chini Mia.”
Konu Mia was accused of killing his mother by hacking her with a spade while she was sleeping on the night of May 25, 1995.
The day after the incident, he gave a confessional statement to the court. After that, his long imprisonment began. The judicial proceedings of the case were suspended on the orders of the High Court due to mental imbalance.
As a result, Konu Mia spent years in prison without trial. He was also separated from his family. Many in the village assumed that Konu Mia was no longer alive.
Recently, Habiganj District Legal Aid Officer and Senior Assistant Judge Muhammad Abbas Uddin brought the matter to the attention. They contacted his two brothers.
Yesterday, Monday (July 14), Advocate MA Majid, a lawyer on the Legal Aid panel, applied for bail on behalf of Konu Mia at the Habiganj District and Sessions Judge's Court.
After the hearing, Judge Jasmine Ara Begum granted it.
