Heavy traffic jam on Dhaka-Tangail highway

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: A severe 30-kilomiter long traffic congestion made the traffic standstill on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakoir of Gazipur since Friday morning, causing serious sufferings to the passengers and transport drivers plying on the highway.

The traffic jam was caused by breakdown of a vehicle, home rush people on holidays and excessive pressure of picnic buses at Chandra intersection of Kaliakoir and its adjacent areas at around 12:00pm.

Sources said that vehicular movement came to a grinding halt since Friday morning causing the long tailback.

Konabari-Salna Highway police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hossain Sarkar said a vehicle got out of service near rail bridge in Tangail, causing the traffic congestion on the highway. Moreover, home rush people on holidays added the woes.

Pressure of picnic buses becomes excessive as the day advances, triggering more traffic congestion on the highway, the OC said.

A good number of picnic buses are on the highway, the OC added.

The OC said law enforcers along with the highway police are trying to bring the situation under control.
