Child dies after speed boat sinks in Padma river

Munshiganj Correspondent: A passenger speed boat sank when it faced a storm in Padma river in Mawa area of the district, leaving a child dead.

The accident took place on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Labi, 8, hailing from Bhedarganj upazila of Shariatpur.

Md Anisur Rahman, Office-in-Charge (OC) of Lohajang Police Station, said a speed boat carrying 18 passengers left Shimulia Ghat of Lohajang for Kawrakandi at around 4:00pm.

The speed boat sank when it faced a storm after arriving at the middle of the river, the OC said.

The OC said passengers of the speed boat, however, managed to swim ashore while a child remained missing.

Later, police along with the local people recovered Labi’s body around 7:30pm, the OC said.

The sunken speed boat was also recovered around 8:00pm, the OC added.
